This extended work commences with musical references to the text ‘King of Kings and Lord of Lords’ form Handel’s Messiah. A faster tempo introduces the tune Darwalls and the associated words, ‘Rejoice, the Lord is King’.

The slow middle section features a cornet solo on the tune Hanover to the words ‘O worship the King all glorious above’. Hanover is further utilised for the final fast section, before a grand finale that harkens back to material from the opening.

Psalm for the King was premiered at The Salvation Army, Australia Southern Territory Commissioning of Cadets in November 2002 by the Melbourne Staff Band.
